Fairfield is a small and tightly-held suburb with lots of beautiful older homes along with the more modern houses which line it's leafy streets. Only 4kms to the CBD, the character and charm of this suburb is the reason why the community spirit stays strong.
With Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre it's 'centre', Fairfield has many parks, walking paths and beautiful views to behold. The train, bus and ferry are all short walks from any part of the suburb and it's only a 20 minute stroll to the University of Queensland.
Bordering Yeronga, Annerley and Dutton Park, the suburb is a mix of younger families, artists and older generations who come together in a rich tapestry of culture and interest. With it's famous cafe, Slink Espresso, you will find that cafe culture is alive and well in the small pocket of Brisbane's Inner South.
The land south of the Brisbane River was traditionally occupied by the Coorpooroo or Yerongpan clan of Turrbal people speaking a Yuggera dialect. They would have used periodic ‘firestick farming’ from the river flats easterly towards the park area, to renew the grass and make hunting easier. After wet weather, the hollows provided water as well as game, especially a swampy area northwest of the upper park area which became the settlers’ water reserve. It was fed partly by a creek in the northwest portion which is no longer parkland.
